Research note: a memorial stone

The dates for John and Sarah come from a memorial stone in Fulton County, Pennsylvania, which reads “MELLOTT / JOHN MELLOTT DIED CA. 1786 / SARAH MELLOTT DIED APRIL 4, 1812 / JOHN MELLOTT AND WIFE SARAH MEMBERS TONOLOWAY BAPTIST CHURCH APRIL 1766”. The stone was clearly set up long after their deaths, so its dates are the work of later researchers. The records behind them, perhaps the minutes of the Tonoloway Baptist Church or a family Bible, have not yet been found.

History and lore

Sarah married John M. Mellott, son of Theodore Melot, and the couple were members of the Tonoloway Baptist Church, in what is now Fulton County, Pennsylvania, by April 1766. She outlived her husband by about 26 years; a memorial stone gives her death as 4 April 1812. Her family name lived on in her grandson Stillwell Mellott. Her own parents are not yet known. The Stillwells were an early Staten Island family, where Gideon Merlet’s sons knew a Daniel Stillwell in the 1670s, but no link between that family and Sarah has been found.

The Mellott memorial stone in Fulton County, Pennsylvania, for John and his wife Sarah. It is a later memorial, not an original grave marker: the words “died ca. 1786” show it was carved long afterward from research into the family.
