Research note: her surname and her dates

Older files call her Elizabeth Morgan, born 1681 and married in 1697, to the younger Abraham Marlett. None of that is supported. She was the later wife of Abraham Marlett (1656–1716), who names her in his will of 6 June 1714.

Her first known child, George, was baptised on 14 April 1706, so the marriage was about 1704–5. Her last, John, was baptised in 1711, which puts her own birth about 1671. On 3 April 1728 “Joris Merlet and Elizabeth Van Nest” were sponsors at a baptism at Harlingen. George was then unmarried, and married women were often recorded under their maiden names, so William P. Marlatt concludes she was probably his mother and a Van Nest. The Marletts and Van Nests appear together in several other records. The name on this page is kept as Morgan until that is proven.
