Elliott Malott worked as a carpenter for fifty years, never for anyone but himself, until he retired in 1934. He kept a big truck garden and, as one grandson remembered, sold milk and moonshine. That grandson drove a team of horses into Batavia with him to pick up feed, learned everything he knew about horses from him, and, because Elliott had a double hernia, carried the materials when they built porches, screens and garages together.
