The Malott Family

The Malotts of Maryland, Kentucky, Ohio and Ontario descend from Theodorus Mellott, grandson of the Huguenot immigrant Gedeon Merlet. It was Theodorus who first signed his name Malot, and most of his children by his second wife, Catherine DeLashmutt, carried the Malott spelling west.

Where the Malott name comes from

Gedeon Merlet’s youngest son, Jean Pierre, dropped the “r” from the family name. His son Theodorus was baptized “Melot” in 1694 but signed himself “Malot”. His children by his first wife became the Mellotts; those by Catherine DeLashmutt, among them Peter and Benjamin, became the Malotts of Frederick and Washington counties, Maryland, near Hagerstown. Spellings still wandered for generations: Peter Malott’s own will of 1804 is signed “Peter Melott”. Read How Our Name Changed.

Family stories

  • Captured on the Ohio. Around 1780, Peter Malott’s family was attacked on the Ohio River near Fish Creek on the way to Kentucky. His wife and several children were taken to Detroit; his daughter Catherine married the loyalist Simon Girty, and her brothers founded the Malotts of Essex County, Ontario.   • Soldiers. Dory Malott was a fifer in the Maryland militia during the Revolution; Delos C. Malott served with the 126th Ohio Infantry in the Civil War; George Dewey Malott served in World War I.
