The family tree lists Theodore as a child of Joseph Malott (b. about 1759) and Caty South. That is probably wrong. Joseph and Caty South did not marry until 22 April 1789, in Madison County, Kentucky, after he was born, and Joseph was only a few years older than the Canadian Malott children. William Marlatt’s study places Theodore among the children of Sarah Malott, who was captured on the Ohio River about 1780 and taken to Detroit; a Theodore aged 5 is named with her on a Detroit provisions list in 1784, and a county history of Essex, Ontario, counts him among three brothers and two sisters who came to Detroit after the Revolution. Whether this family’s father was Peter Malott (b. ca 1727), or Peter’s brother Joseph (b. about 1738–46), whose wife was also named Sarah, is still debated. Theodore is one of the Malott children who came to Canada after their mother’s capture on the Ohio River around 1780. He settled in Gosfield Township in 1794, married Catherine Wigle, and died at Kingsville in 1836. Whether his father was Peter or Joseph Malott is still debated.
