Jeanne married Josias Merle at Roucy, in Champagne, around 1618, in the years when the Edict of Nantes allowed French Protestants, the Huguenots, to worship in peace. Her sons Gideon and Paulus were born at Roucy. As persecution returned, Gideon left France as a Huguenot refugee for Holland and, in 1662, America.
