Josias was born at Roucy, in Champagne, in 1600, two years after Henri IV’s Edict of Nantes gave French Protestants, the Huguenots, a measure of religious freedom. He raised his family at Roucy during that fragile peace. As the crown chipped away at Huguenot rights in the following decades, his son Gideon left France for Holland, and later America.
