Research note
Some family records say David’s wife Rebecca was the daughter of John Malott and Elizabeth Wilson; according to William Marlatt’s study, Rebecca herself testified in pension papers that, despite the shared surname, she and David were not related. Rebecca’s parents are therefore uncertain.
The family tree lists David as a child of Joseph Malott (b. about 1759) and Caty South. That is probably wrong. Joseph and Caty South did not marry until 22 April 1789, in Madison County, Kentucky, after he was born, and Joseph was only a few years older than the Canadian Malott children. His own marriage and death records in Brown County, Ohio, name his parents as Joseph and Susan (or Sarah) Malott, which points to the older Joseph, Peter’s brother. The 1850 census gives his birthplace as Kentucky, suggesting his father was there around 1782. Whether this family’s father was Peter Malott (b. ca 1727), or Peter’s brother Joseph (b. about 1738–46), whose wife was also named Sarah, is still debated.
