The Mellotts, found especially in Pennsylvania and Maryland, descend from Jean Pierre Mellot, youngest son of the Huguenot immigrant Gedeon Merlet, through Jean Pierre’s son Theodorus and grandson John.

Where the Mellott name comes from

Jean Pierre (John Peter) Merlet, born at Mannheim in 1658, lost the “r” from the family name and was often recorded as John Peterson Melot, Mellat or Mallat. His son Theodorus was baptized “Melot” in 1694. Theodorus’s son John M. Mellott, born in 1725 to his first wife, Catherine Maple, kept the Mellott spelling, and his descendants, mainly in Pennsylvania, are the Mellotts of today. Read How Our Name Changed.

  • John Mellott’s children included Theodore (b. 1752) and John, Obediah, Jacob and Frances, from whom many Pennsylvania Mellott lines descend.
  • The earliest Mellotts lived on Staten Island and in Middlesex County, New Jersey, where Jean Pierre died in 1704. His sister Ann, born on Staten Island in 1666, drowned in 1681. Read Across the Atlantic in 1662.
