How this family connects to the rest of the Mellotts on this site is not yet known. James was born at Mellott’s Mill, in Licking Creek Township, Fulton County, the valley where the Mellott spelling took root after John and Sarah Mellott settled there in the 1760s, so he very likely descends from them. The 1880 census, taken a year after his birth, should name his parents and the household at Mellott’s Mill.
The family Bible records James’s birth at Mellott’s Mill, in Licking Creek Township, Fulton County, Pennsylvania, on 1 July 1879. The mill evidently took its name from the family. He married Laura F. E. Deshong, born the same year at nearby Pleasant Ridge, continuing a long run of Mellott and Deshong marriages in Fulton County. Their son Luther was born at Pleasant Ridge in 1904, and six more children were born at Saluvia, Fulton County, between 1906 and 1922.
