First marriage

Before he married Mildred Adams, George married Annie Luiza South, 17, of South Lebanon, Warren County, Ohio, on 19 July 1921. The marriage record gives his age as 22 on 10 March 1921, his birthplace as Brown County, his father as William Malott, and his occupation as laborer, all matching George Dewey Malott, although the application writes his middle initial as “G.” His own signature and the certificate read “George D. Malott.” The marriage ended in divorce: by April 1924, when Annie married Jay Orin Kinner, she was described as divorced, “her married name being Mrs. Annie Malott.” The date of the divorce is not known.

History and lore

George served in the Army at the end of World War I, and in 1942, at 43, he registered again for the World War II draft, one of millions of older men who did. His card, signed “George D Malott,” gives his full name as George Dewey Malott, his birth date as 10 March 1899 and his birthplace as Greenbush, Ohio, in Green Township, Brown County. He was living with Mildred at 5230 Hunter Avenue in Norwood and working for the Norwood Sash & Door Manufacturing Company.

George died at his home in Norwood, Ohio, on 8 January 1985, at the age of 85. His death notice describes him as the “beloved husband of Mildred C. (nee Adams) Malott” and the “loving father of Leroy J., Robert E., and Ray E. Malott, also the late George T. Malott and Rosella M. Malott”, all five of them his children with Mildred. He was survived by his sisters, Addie Moore and Laura Mitchell, by 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and by “a host of nieces and nephews.” Friends called at the Vorhis Funeral Home on Montgomery Road, Norwood, where his funeral was held on Thursday, 10 January 1985, and memorial gifts were asked for the Liberty Baptist Church on Carthage Avenue, Norwood.

A descendant of George took a Y-DNA test for the Marlatt-Merlet DNA Project. His line, through Peter Malott, Theodore “Dory”, Prather, Delos C. and William Samuel Malott, matches the Malott and Mellott group closely, within one step of the group’s typical profile, confirming his descent from Theodorus Melot (b. 1694).
