From the 1900 U.S. census, Sterling Township, Brown County, Ohio, enumeration district 20, sheet 1B, enumerated 1 June 1900. The first name may be Alfred.

Research note: who was his mother?

This page identifies his widowed mother “Mary Malott” as Margaret Eveline Waits. Mark Malott’s Ancestry family tree, however, gives Margaret’s death as 14 April 1908, which would rule her out as the Mary of 1910. The tree cites no record for that date, so the question is open.

Research note: named as her son in 1910

The 1910 census settles part of the question raised by his absence in 1870: Fred, 52, is listed as the son of the head of household, Mary Malott, 83, a widow and mother of eight children, three then living. Mary is the name Margaret Eveline Waits went by in her later years. So Fred was her son; that his father was Delos remains the most likely explanation, but this record names only his mother.

Research note: missing in 1870

Fred does not appear in Delos and Margaret’s household in the 1870 census, when he would have been 12; their children listed that year are David D. (16), William S. (8) and Sarah M. (5). Boys of 12 often worked and lodged with other families, so he may simply have been living elsewhere, but his absence makes it less certain that he was their son. Finding him in 1870, or in the 1860 or 1880 census with his parents named, would settle it.

Research note

In 1900 Fred lived with a widowed Mary Malott, born June 1826, who is almost certainly Delos’s widow, Margaret Eveline Waits, called “Mary Eveline” on Delos’s 1864 hospital card. That makes Fred very probably a son of Delos and Margaret, born four years after their marriage, but no record yet names his father.
