Research note: a memorial stone

The dates for John and Sarah come from a memorial stone in Fulton County, Pennsylvania, which reads “MELLOTT / JOHN MELLOTT DIED CA. 1786 / SARAH MELLOTT DIED APRIL 4, 1812 / JOHN MELLOTT AND WIFE SARAH MEMBERS TONOLOWAY BAPTIST CHURCH APRIL 1766”. The stone was clearly set up long after their deaths, so its dates are the work of later researchers. The records behind them, perhaps the minutes of the Tonoloway Baptist Church or a family Bible, have not yet been found.

History and lore

John was the son of Theodore Melot by his first wife, Catherine Maple, and the ancestor of the Mellotts: his descendants took that spelling, mainly in Pennsylvania. He married Sarah Stillwell, and one of their grandsons was named Stillwell Mellott. By April 1766 John and Sarah were members of the Tonoloway Baptist Church, in the Tonoloway valley on the Pennsylvania–Maryland line, in what is now Fulton County, Pennsylvania, where the Mellott spelling took root. A memorial stone there gives John’s death as about 1786.
