Research note: identifying the Mount Vision pioneer

The Town of Laurens Historical Society describes a Peter Marlett (1779–1869) who moved to Mount Vision from Montgomery County, New York, and married Elizabeth Evans. This page takes him to be Gideon and Mary Marlett’s son Peter, born 4 March 1779: the year matches, and Gideon’s family came from Montgomery County, the Mohawk valley around Gideon Marlett’s claim at Fort Hunter. No other Peter of that age is known in the family. A census record or will naming his parents would make it certain.

History and lore

Peter grew up in the Mohawk valley of Montgomery County, New York, one of the twelve children of Gideon Marlett and Mary Quackenbush, and moved west to Otsego County, where he was an early pioneer settler of Mount Vision, then called Jacksonville, in the Town of Laurens. He married Elizabeth Evans. Their daughter Margaret married Hervey Keyes, Mount Vision’s first storekeeper. Peter died in 1869, aged about 90.
