Orab Cemetery in Green Township, Brown County, Ohio — the same township the family is recorded in throughout this site, and the namesake of the local Brooks–Malott Road. Matches Delos C. Malott (1824–1889). A military marker for his Union Army service.

Read the story of this stone

Mark Malott and his brother Dave combed the cemeteries of Brown County looking for this grave. They had been told it was in Greenbush Cemetery, and that is where they found it. The stone is so old and worn that it is hard to read.

The stone spells his name Mallott, with two l’s. That is hard to make out in the photos, but Mark has examined the stone in person. Not that spelling always matters, but nearly every document spells the name Malott. Why the stone is different is anyone’s guess.

The grave is in the same cemetery as that of his grandfather, Theodore “Dory” Malott, who served in the Revolutionary War. The edge of the cemetery is eroding, and there is a worry that the grave may one day wash out. Mark plans to honor his ancestor with a new stone someday.

Local members of the Mount Orab VFW, Wilson Sroufe VFW Post 9772, mark veterans’ graves like this one with American flags.

The flag holder at his grave is the star of the Grand Army of the Republic, marked “GAR 1861–1865.” The GAR was not the Army itself but the brotherhood of Union Army veterans, founded in 1866. Any Union soldier, sailor or marine who served in the Civil War and was honorably discharged could join, and the GAR star is still used today to mark their graves. Delos served from May to October 1864 and was discharged for disability, so he was a Union veteran of the war. Whether he joined a GAR post is not known.

Matches George Dewey Malott (1899–1985) exactly. Also names his wife, Mildred “Milly” Adams Malott (1910–1986). Her dates are hard to read in the photo; 1910–1986 is confirmed by family.

Hiram Malott

“HIRAM MALOTT BORN JULY 25 1814 DIED JAN 27 1897 / MARY MALOTT BORN JUNE 27 1826 DIED JULY 10 1916 / MATILDA SMITH MARRIED TO HIRAM MALOTT JUNE 27 1838. DIED JUNE 12 1844.”

Matches Hiram Malott, already recorded with Matilda Smith as his wife but with no dates for either of them. This stone shows Matilda died young in 1844, and that Hiram later had a second wife, Mary (1826–1916), not yet in the tree.

Theodore “Dory” Malott

Headstone: “THEODORE MALOTT / DIED MARCH 10 1845 / AGED 89 YEARS 3 M’S & 3 DAYS” (a reproduction of the original 1845 stone). Foot stone: “THEODORE DORY MALOTT / FIFER MD MILITIA / REVOLUTIONARY WAR / NOV 7 1755 – MARCH 10 1845.” Greenbush Cemetery, Green Township, Brown County, Ohio.

Matches Theodore “Dory” Malott (b. 1755) exactly, and adds his exact birth and death dates and his Revolutionary War service as a fifer in the Maryland militia — none of which was in the tree before. The foot stone is a government veteran’s marker applied for in 1965. The two stones disagree about his birth: 89 years, 3 months and 3 days before 10 March 1845 is 7 December 1755, the date in his pension file, so the 1845 stone is right and the foot stone’s November date is a mistake.

There are two stones at Theodore’s grave in Greenbush Cemetery. The upright headstone is a reproduction of the original stone placed when he died in 1845. The Daughters of the American Revolution paid to have the graves of Revolutionary War soldiers honored, and Hirons Memorial Works of Mount Orab did the work. The stone of those days wore away quickly, and out of respect the original headstone was buried at the grave.

The flat granite foot stone, recording his service as a fifer in the Maryland militia, is a government veteran’s marker. Two women of the family, from Cincinnati and Williamsburg, applied for it in July 1965; the Army verified his service that August, and the marker, with a Latin cross, was cut by the Barretto Granite Company of Milford, New Hampshire, and shipped to Williamsburg to be set at the grave.

His grandson Delos C. Malott, a Civil War soldier, is buried in the same cemetery.

Matches Harry C. “Bud” Malott (1917–1997) of Williamsburg, who served in the Ohio House of Representatives for Clermont County from 1973 to 1990, hence “Honorable” on his stone, and his wife Catherine Cora “Kate” Elliott (1929–1994). The square and compass is the Masonic emblem; the star under Kate’s name is the Order of the Eastern Star. How his family joins the tree is not yet known.

Not the same Prather Malott already in the tree (born 1790, Delos’s father) — this one was born 85 years later. Families in this line reused ancestors’ names often (Theodore, Prather), so this is plausibly another son of Delos, named for his grandfather.

Possibly Syrenia Caroline Dunn, wife of Frank Malott (1861–1938); Frank died the same year, 1938. Her dates aren’t in the family records, so this is unconfirmed.

Very probably Rosella M. Malott, daughter of George Dewey Malott and Mildred Adams, named as “the late Rosella M. Malott” in her father’s 1985 death notice. A sister of Leroy Joseph Malott.

Very likely Peter Malott (born 1786), son of John, and his wife Martha B. Dunford: the name, the wife’s name and a birth about November 1786 all agree. The stone adds their death dates and a son, Solomon, who died at seven, less than a month before his father. The panel is one face of a Turner family monument, so it was probably cut long after 1826.

Clearly Malott family stones, but no one in the tree matches on name and year. Some may belong to relatives simply not yet researched; others may need a closer look at the photo to read a worn date correctly.

Not yet in the tree. The 1910 census of Sterling Township, Brown County, finds Aaron Malott, 52, a farmer who owned his farm, and Mary C., 47, married 27 years (about 1883), with no children. Born about 1858, the same year as Fred Malott, Aaron could be a cousin, or one of the two unnamed children of Delos C. Malott and Margaret Waits; nothing yet proves it. A sharper photograph shows the death year is 1933, not 1930 as first read.

Not a Malott surname — possibly a Malott daughter who married into the Adams family, but no Cora appears in the tree.

Open questions. Anna was born about 1800–01. Is this the Peter Malott, a son of Dory, whom Bill Marlatt’s study says married Ann Smith? If so, is he the same man as Peter Malott (born about 1788), or a younger Peter born about 1797? Which cemetery is this, and who took the photograph?

Theodore Malott

Open questions. Which Theodore is this? Candidates in the tree include Theodore (born about 1794), a son of Dory, and Theodore (born 1783), a son of Joseph. What are the year of death and the age, and where is the stone? A larger photograph would settle it.

Very likely John M. Mellott (1725–c. 1786), son of Theodore Melot, and his wife Sarah Stillwell: the only John and Sarah Mellott couple in the tree, and one of their grandsons was named Stillwell Mellott. The site had no death dates for them before this stone. It is a later memorial, not an original marker, so its dates come from research rather than from the time.
