Research note: the cousin who went to Canada

This is the Paul Marlatt who left Log Gaol (now Johnsonburg), New Jersey, about 1790 with his “cousin” Abraham Marlatt and settled beside him in Clinton Township, Lincoln County, Upper Canada. Both were granted land in 1791. Paul married Elizabeth (Elsie) Wilcox. He should not be confused with Abraham’s son Paul (born 1815), who inherited Abraham’s farm. How the two men were related is not known; Y-DNA from a descendant of Abraham suggests both belonged to the Sussex County branch of the family.

His grave. Paul is buried at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church cemetery in Grimsby, a few miles from the Konkle-Marlatt cemetery. His flat marker reads “PAUL / FATHER OF / ISAAC MARLATT / 1772 — 1844,” and lies in front of a Marlatt family monument. The church was founded by Loyalists in 1794, and the cemetery is on land given by Colonel Robert Nelles. The marker names a son, Isaac Marlatt (about 1803–1876), who was long attached to the wrong parents in the old family file.

Two photographs: a pale granite family monument inscribed MARLATT, and a flat marker below it reading Paul, father of Isaac Marlatt, 1772 to 1844

Research note: two entries merged

The old family file carried this man twice: once as Paul Marlatt, a son of John Marlett (1721–1780) and Lydia Jarrard, and once as “Paul Marllatt, born 1772,” a son of John Marlatt (born 1743) and Margaret, with no wife and no later record. Same name, same birth year, so the two entries were judged to be one man and merged (6 October 2026). He is shown here as a son of John Marlett and Lydia Jarrard, following the Marlett family history published in 1907 by Jane Marlett Taft. The other parentage, John Marlatt (born 1743) and Margaret, came from the old family file and is not supported by any record seen so far. It remains a possibility until a record settles it.
