Research note: whose son was he?
This is the Gideon who married Anne Vanderipe and is buried in the Marlatt Cemetery at Jasper, New York. His dates come from that cemetery. Who his parents were is disputed.
The older view, followed in the original file and in the RootsWeb Merlet genealogy, makes him the Gideon baptised at Readington on 16 or 17 June 1754 with his sister Pieternelle, a son of Abraham Marlett and Martha Vail. Those are the parents shown here.
William P. Marlatt disagrees. His Marlatt-Merlet DNA Project report says that baptism records of Christ Church, Ballston Spa, New York, show the Gideon of Jasper was not the Gideon baptised in 1754, and his 2019 table of Y-DNA lineages gives this Gideon as a son of John Marlett (born 1711). On that view the Gideon who was Abraham and Martha’s son is the one who went to Berkeley County, Virginia, about 1784–86.
The evidence behind the second view has not been seen here, so the parents are left as they were until it can be checked.
