Research note: two Richards in Berkeley County
Dirck and Richard are the same name. From 1787 there were two Richard Marlatts in Berkeley County, Virginia: this man, and his nephew Richard (born about 1762–65), son of his brother Abraham. Older research merged them into one man with two wives, which is how the Ohio family of his grandson John Marlatt came to be attached to the wrong Richard.
In February 1852 Lewis Vail wrote that he had met the wife of Richard Marlatt in Coshocton County, “where she lived and died, perhaps about 1818. She had but one child, Abraham Marlatt, who died there also, leaving several children.”
