Research note: his parents
This page, like about seven in ten trees online, used to make John the son of Richard Marlatt and Lidy Beller. No record supports that. Richard and Lidy’s son John was born about 1793, was still in Berkeley County in 1810 and later lived in Warren County, Ohio.
John’s descendant William P. Marlatt concludes that his father was Abraham Marlatt, baptised in 1773, and his grandfather Dirck (Richard) Marlatt, baptised in 1744. The main evidence is an 1852 letter from Lewis Vail, who had been at John’s house in 1840 and called him “son of Abraham and grandson of Richard”; the 1839 will of Abraham Marlatt naming John as his brother; and a Coshocton County account book in which Richard, Abraham and John trade together from 1809. The case is circumstantial, and its weak points are set out on Abraham’s page.
John was born a year before his father married Mary Maple. DNA shared with Maple descendants suggests she was nevertheless his mother.

Research note: a duplicate entry, and his children
The original file carried this man twice: once as John Marlatt, husband of Catherine Hamersley, and once as “John ‘Jno’ Marlatt,” born 1794 in Virginia, with a wife “Cathernie” born 1796 in Pennsylvania and four children born in Ohio. That second entry, which reads like a census household, had been attached to a different family, as a son of John Marlett (born 1752). The two were merged here on 2 October 2026.
The four children shown come from that second entry and their dates are approximate. William P. Marlatt’s study names other children of John and Catherine who do not yet have pages: Abraham (born 1816), Isaac (1818–1902), John (1826), Ellen (1828), Harriet (1830) and Addison (1834), with daughters Mary, Elizabeth and Catherine. Ellen is probably the same person in both lists; the Abraham and David shown here have not been matched to his list.
