Families of Peter Malott b. ca 1727 and Joseph Malott b. ca 1738–1746

Introduction

The following is a summary of genealogical information on the families of Peter Malott b. ca 1727 in Frederick Co., MD and Joseph Malott b. ca 1738-1746 in Frederick Co., MD. Various sources suggest that Peter and/or Joseph Malott, wife Sarah and several Malott children were attacked by Indians ca 22 March 1778-1780 at Fish Creek on the Ohio River while making their way to Kentucky via flat boat. Reportedly, Sarah Malott and approximately five Malott children were captured and eventually were taken to the Detroit area. Conflicting accounts have been written about the families of Peter and Joseph Malott, making it difficult to identify the members of each family group. Determining the parentage of the Malott children is further complicated because the names given to the Malott family members were common, and often there were individuals living at the same time with identical names. The purpose of this document is to compile what is known about these Malott family members to help develop accurate family group records for the families of Peter Malott and Joseph Malott.

This document is arranged in separate sections: The "First Generation" section provides genealogical information for Peter Malott and Joseph Malott including name, birth, father, mother, death, burial, spousal, and marriage information. General notes are also provided. The "Second Generation" section provides similar information for the possible children of Peter and Joseph Malott. The "Observations" section highlights conflicting information, interesting points, and questions for further research. Four wives are identified for Peter b. ca 1727: Sarah Tracy, Sarah Crossley, Ruth Keys, and Rachel Keys. Possible explanations for this include: 1) Peter was married four times, 2) There was more than one Peter who married these women, 3) At least some of the wives identified are in error. Possibly the surnames for some of these women were based on speculation rather than hard evidence. 4) There may be confusion regarding the married names and maiden names of some of the wives (e.g., Tracey vs. Crossley). 5) Some of the women may go by more than one name (e.g., Ruth vs. Rachel). 6) The handwritten record was misinterpreted (e.g., Ruth vs. Rachel; and Tracey vs. Crossley).

There is conflicting information regarding Peter who was captured by Indians on the Ohio River: Birth: 1) 1767 in Frederick Co., MD, 2) About 1757, 3) 30 January 1765 in Washington Co., MD, 4) 1781-1784. Parents: 1) Peter and Sarah (Tracy or Crossley?) Malott, 2) Joseph and Sarah (Harmon?) Malott/Mellott. Marriages: 1) Mary Jones m. 1789 in Detroit, and 2) Susanna Isenberger m. 25 December 1810 in Washington Co., MD. Death: 1) 3 December 1815 in Gosfield Twp., Essex Co., Ontario, Canada, 2) March 1814 in Washington Co., MD, 3) 1815, 4) 1814 in Clermont Co., OH. If these references are accurate, there could be three Peters living in this time period: 1) in Canada, 2) in Washington and 3) in Clermont Co., OH.

The references suggest that there was more than one Daniel Malott living in the same general time period: Birth: 1770-1772 in Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD, 2) 7 November 1775, probably Frederick Co., MD, 3) 31 Jul 1780 in Washington Co., MD, and 4) 30 August 1780. Parents: 1) Peter and Sarah (Tracy?) Malott, and 2) Dory and Anne (Lane) Malott. Marriages: 1) Sarah Blew/Blue m. 2 February 1804 in Washington Co., MD and, 2) Sarah Ensminger m. 19 April 1814 in Washington Co., MD. Death: 1) 13 January 1834 in Washington Co., MD and, 2) 1857 in Clermont Co., OH.

The references indicate that there was more than one Theodore Malott living in the same time period: Birth: 1) 7 December 1755 in Frederick Co., MD, 2) 7 November 1755 in Frederick Co., MD, 3) About 1783 in Essex Co., Ontario, Canada, 4) 1770-1772, MD. Parents: 1) Peter and Sarah (Tracy?) Malott 2) Peter and Rachel Malott, and 3) Joseph and Sarah Malott. Marriages: 1) Anne Lane m. 1780 in Washington Co., MD, 2) Catherine Wigle m. before 1799 in Essex Co., Ontario, Canada. Death: 1) 10 March 1845 in Clermont or Brown Co., OH, 2) 25 March 1836 - 1 April 1836 in Kingsville, Essex Co., Ontario, Canada.

There is conflicting information regarding Catherine who was captured by Indians on the Ohio River: Birth: 1) 1761-64, 2) 1764, 3) 1765, and 4) about 1779. Parents: 1) Peter and Sarah (Tracy?) Malott, and 2) Joseph and Sarah (Harmon?) Malott. Captured: 1) March 1779 left for KY, 2) April, 3) About 1778, 4) 1778-1780, 4) 22 March 1780, 5) when Catherine was age 14. Duration held by the Indians: 1) 4 years, 2) 4 years, 3 months, and 3) 4 years, 4 months. Left Indian Village: 1) 1783, 2) August 1784, 3) when Catherine was age 19. Married: 1) when Catherine was about age 18, 2) 1782, 3) 1784.

There is conflicting information regarding David Malott: Birth: 1) about 1767 in Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD, 2) 14 August 1777 in Washington Co., MD, 3) Age 68 in 1850 (i.e., about 1782), 4) age 75 in 1860 (i.e., 1785). Parents: 1) Peter and Sarah (Tracy?) Malott, 2) Joseph and Sarah (Harmon?) Malott. Marriage: Rebecca Malott/Melot m. 29 January 1812 in Clermont Co., OH. Death: 1) 14 March 1870 in Sterling Twp., Clermont Co., OH, age 92 yrs, 7 mo. 2) Settled in the neighborhood of St. Catherine's Ontario.

There is conflicting information regarding Keziah Malott: Birth: 1) 30 January 1765 in MD, 2) about 1778, 3) 16 October 1778 in MD, 4) 1778-1780 .. probably born while her mother was in captivity, 5) 1777, Frederick Co., MD. Parents: 1) Joseph and Sarah (Harmon?) Malott, and 2) Theodore Malotte. Death: 1) 22 November 1829 in St. Louis, MO, 2) 22 November 1833 in St. Louis, MO.

There is conflicting information regarding Delilah Malott: Birth: 1) 30 June 1776 Grosse Isle, Wayne, MI, 2) 30 June 1786 Grosse Isle, 3) 30 June 1776 Washington Co., MD. Note that the capture of the Malott family took place around 1778-1780, so if Delilah was with this captured group, it is unlikely that she was born in Grosse Isle. Reference 27, source 3 states that the record of this family in the dominion of Canada begins with the migration of three brothers and two sisters. Peter, Theodore, David, Catherine and Delilah who made their was to Detroit soon after the close of the Revolution in 1783. If this statement is correct, then Delilah was born before ~1783.

A Washington County, MD document in 1795 shows Rachel Malott signing as wife of Peter Malott as does his will record Rachel as wife. (ref. 17). This indicates that there was a Peter in Maryland in 1795 after the capture of the Malott family.

Horton notes two deeds for the sale of property in Sharpsburg, MD, one in January 1764, signed by wife Sarah, and the other, two months later, in March 1764, signed by wife Rachel. (ref. 60, source 3) This raises the question of whether there were two Peter Malotts living at this time in the same area, one who married Sarah and one who married Rachel, or whether there was one Peter Malott who was married to one woman who went by either of the names Sarah or Rachel.

Peter Malott leased 106 acres of land according to records of Maryland, ‘State of His Lordship Manor (Conegocheague) in 1767.’ The records shows that Peter was age 40 years, Sarah, his wife, was 34, and Thomas, their son, was age 16. (ref. 5, pp. 22 and 25; ref. 27, source 4) If Peter and Sarah had other children, why weren't they listed also? Individuals born before 1767 include: Theodore b. 1755, John b. 1758, William b. 1764, Hannah b. 1765, and Peter b. 1765-7. Possibly only the oldest son was mentioned.

Hannah Malott b. 22 Aug 1765 and Peter Malott b. 30 Jan 1765 were apparently born less than 9 months apart. Were these two children born to different parents?

Daniel Malott b. 31 Jul 1780 was apparently born after the capture of the Malott children in 1778-1780.

Hannah Malott and William South were married in the Fall of 1782 in Washington. This was after the capture of the Malott children in 1778-1780.

There appear to be two different Hannah Malotts living at approximately the same time. One was born on 22 August 1765 in Washington Co., MD, married William South in 1782 in Washington Co., MD and died 6 Oct 1843 in Clermont Co., MD. The other was born ca 1780 in Washington Co., married Daniel Badger on 17 Jun 1798 in Hamilton Co., OH and died after 1851 in Wabash Co., IN. It is unlikely that these two Hannah's were the same person since George Badger, son of Daniel and Hannah (Malott) Badger, was born on 7 Aug 1821 in Indiana. The Hannah b. 1765 would have been age 55 at the time of George's birth. It would have been unusual for a woman of this age to be having children. Also, if Hannah had remarried to Daniel Badger in 1798, Peter would not have referred to her as Hannah South in his will in 1804.

Joseph Malott was found on the tax list of 1789 in Madison Co., KY about 9 years after the capture of the Malott children in 1778-1780.

There was a Hiram who came to Clay County, Mo. in the fall of 1829.

John Malott's daughter Rebecca was born in 1795 in KY and his son Abner was born in 1799 in Clermont Co., OH. John must have moved from KY to OH sometime between these two times.

William Malott was living in Clermont Co., OH by 1800.

In 1808 Peter McGowen made will naming dau Sarah Malot. Who were the parents of this Sarah Malot?

Daniel Malott was living in Clermont Co., OH by 1812 the time of his marriage.

28 Jan 1830 -- Land record involving Daniel Malott and Malott, Michael, Delilah (ref. 54). This record is from Miami Co. Does this record show any relationships between Daniel, Michael and Delilah? Were there two Delilahs, one who married Philip Wright and died in Essex Co., Ontario. and one who was associated with Daniel and Michael of Ohio/Maryland?

Marriage and death records for David Malott in Brown Co., Ohio both show his parents as Joseph and Susan Malott. (ref. 76)

Peter Malott made his will on 17 January 1804 and it was filed for probate on 23 May 1806 in Washington Co., MD. The following family members were named in the order shown: 1) "my well beloved wife Rachel", 2) "my beloved sons Peter, Michael and Daniel Melott", 3) "Thomas Melott", 4) "Dory Melott", 5) "John Melott", 6) "Joseph Melott", 7) William Malott, 8) "Hiram Melott", 9) "Hannah South", 10) "Sarah Stewart". Signed by Peter Melott, Test: John Edwards, Henry Isenberger and Jonas Hogmire. (ref. 5, source 1) This shows a relationship between Peter Malott Sr. and the Isenberger, South and Stewart families. Note that Peter Malott b. ca1765-7 married Susannah Isenberger; Hannah Malott married William South; and Sarah Malott married John Stewart. It is interesting that Delilah and Keziah were not mentioned in this will. The order of the children listed in the will may give an indication of their ages of birth. Peter Malott made his will on 17 January 1804 and it was filed for probate on 23 May 1806 in Washington Co., MD. Around the same time, Peter G. Malott, son of Peter Malott and Mary Jones, was born on 13 March 1804 in Gosfield, Essex, Ontario, Canada. Could the beloved son Peter mentioned in the will of Peter dated 1804 probated in Washington Co., MD be that same Peter that was having children with Mary Jones in 1804 in Canada? It seems unlikely, especially since Peter G. Malott was married in Canada. If the Peter who married Mary Jones returned to Washington Co., MD and appeared in the 1810 Washington Co., MD census, he likely would have brought his son Peter G. Malott with him since Peter G. Malott would have been very young at the time. If the Peter who married Mary Jones stayed in Washington Co., MD, Peter G. Malott would have likely been raised in Washington Co., MD and would have married and raised his family in Washington Co., MD. Since Peter G. Malott married and raised his family in Canada, it is likely that the Peter who married Mary Jones stayed in Canada. This of course is speculation. The Peter who married Mary Jones could have traveled to Washington Co., MD and then returned to Canada.

There were two Daniel Malotts (2121001-011101 and 0111001-1110201) shown in the 1830 Census in Williamsburg Twp., Clermont Co., OH living near each other. Both were age 40-50.

There were two William Souths. One shown in the 1810 Tax List in Stonelick Twp., Clermont Co., OH. (Ref. 122) and one shown in the 1810 U.S. Census in Marsh Twp., Washington Co., MD. (Ref. 125).

There were two Isaac Malotts shown in the 1830 U.S. Census in OH: one in Liberty Township, Adams Co, OH,. and one in Union Twp., Clermont Co., OH.

There were two Joseph Malotts/Molotts living in 1820: A Joseph Malot (320001-10010) is shown in the 1820 U.S. Census in Madison Co., KY. A Joseph Molott (100010-201??) is shown in the 1820 U.S. Census in Huntington Twp., Brown Co., OH. (ref. 128).

There is a David Malott age 68 born Kentucky, shown in the 1850 Census, Sterling Township, Brown Co., OH, p. 418. This indicates that David's father was in Kentucky around 1782 which is shortly after the capture of the Malott children on the Ohio River. David's father was identified as Joseph. Note that a Joseph Molott (100010-201??) is shown in the 1820 U.S. Census in Huntington Twp., Brown Co., OH. (ref. 128). This indicates that there was 1 male 0-10, 1 male 26-45, 2 females 0-10 and 1 female 16-26. The Joseph would have been born 1775-1796. The relationship between this David and this Joseph is unclear.

Sources show that a Thomas Malott was buried in Brier Ridge Cem., Liberty Twp., Adams Co, OH (ref. 1) and that a Thomas Malott was buried in Fairview Cem., Adams Co., O. (ref. 76). Is this the same cemetery or were there two different Thomas Malotts?

Frederick Co., MD was formed from Prince Georges Co. in 1748. Washington Co., MD was formed from Frederick Co., MD in 1776.

Adams Co., OH was formed from Hamilton Co., OH in 1797. Clermont Co., OH was formed from Hamilton Co., OH in 1800. Brown Co., OH was formed from Adams and Clermont Counties, OH in 1818.

A change from the Julian to the Gregorian Calendar was made in 1752. As a result, 11 days were missing from the calendar (i.e., 3-13 Sep 1752).

Often the first-born male child in a family was named after the child's paternal grandfather. This technique may give clues as to whether Peter or Joseph was the father of the individuals listed above.
